These eyes... this hair... they are not my own.
There was something profound about the sight of a broken bridge, Shirami thought, squinting through a mask of skin. At the foot of the great yawning pit before him... a heap of crumbling ruins was all that remained of the stone facilitator that had once joined the two sides of the valley together.
Hmmn. This presented the wayward Aburame with a problem.
On the one side, the road carried on towards the Land of Earth. A dominating country of mountains and chasms, verging upon the borders of the lush Land of Grass. Somewhere between the two... a boundary between a quiet forest and a lonely canyon, perhaps. He could picture himself settling there. A place where he could establish a new hive. One to replace the one taken from him when his previous hiding place had been discovered.
The same face he wore now was the one he'd stolen, not three nights ago, from one of the ones who had found him. Taking him by surprise, their intention had been to capture or kill him. Brutishly, he'd stolen one of their faces. Killing the original owner in the process, and using his image to fool the others long enough to make his escape. It was a shameful thing he had done... a reprehensible and selfish action. But to his dismay, he could ill-afford to discard the grisly mask he wore just yet.
He wasn't safe... and while his personal safety was an inconsequential matter, for him to die would be to shatter the chain of a family tradition. To condemn a self-contained ecosystem that had lived in harmony with his family since the very founding of their ancestry. No. There was absolutely no alternative but to continue.
But... continue, how? Was he expected to sprout wings and soar across the ravine?
Once beyond the borders of Kusa, he would be entirely outside the realm of Konoha and the nation's allies. The people chasing him would find it impossible to follow, and give up on their endeavor. No more kikaichu would have to die to protect him... it was such a delightful thing to dream.
